THEORY OFOPERATION
Theinverterchanges12VDCinto120VAC(120VACRMS),electricalpower .This
isaccomplishedintwostages.Thefirststageraisesthe12VDCinputto145VDC
throughmodernhigh-frequencyconversiontechniques.Theoutputstagechanges
the145-VDCto120VAC.Theinverter'soutputstageusesmultiplebanksofmetal-
oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) to alternately apply
oppositepolarity to theAC outlet'sHOT and NEUTRAL terminals.TheACoutput
approximatesasinewaveinshape.ThisiscalledModifiedSineWave(MSW)and
it has the same energy characteristics as the sine wave of commercial electrical
power.

A TRUERMSvoltmetermustbeusedformeasuringMSW .Iftheoutputof
the inverter is measured using standard digital or analog voltmeters, these
instrumentsmaynotcorrectlyreadthevoltage.Theytypicallywillreadfrom10to
20voltslow.
ACAPPLIANCECAUTIONS:
DONOT plugsmallappliancesintotheinverterreceptaclestodirectlyrechargetheir
nickel-cadmiumbatteries.Alwaysusetherechargerprovidedwiththatappliance.
DoNOT plug inbattery chargers forcordless power toolsif the chargercarries a
warningthatdangerousvoltagesarepresentatthebatteryterminals.
Not all fluorescent lamps operate properly
with this type of inverter. If the bulb
appearstobetoobright,orfailstolight,donotusethelampwiththisinverter.
Fans with synchronous motors may slightly increase in speed (RPM) when
poweredbytheinverter.Thisisnotharmfultothefanortotheinverter.
Certainchargersforsmallnickel-cadmiumbatteriescanbedamagedifpluggedinto
theinverters.Inparticular,twotypesofappliancesaresusceptibletodamage:
Small,battery-operatedappliancessuchasflashlights,cordlessrazors
andtoothbrushesthatcanbepluggeddirectlyintoanACreceptacle
torecharge
Certainbatterychargersforbatterypacksthatareusedinsomecordless
hand-tools.Chargersforthesetoolshaveawarninglabelstatingthat
dangerousvoltagesarepresentatthebatteryterminals
